Computing Foundation

Programme Overview

The APIIT Sri Lanka Computing Foundation programme is an APIIT award approved by the University of Staffordshire, UK, serving as the recognised entry qualification for University of Staffordshire Computing degree programmes offered at APIIT.

Designed for students with GCE O/L qualifications who are not pursuing GCE A/L studies, or whose A/L results do not yet meet direct entry requirements, this programme provides a structured and rigorous pathway into undergraduate computing.

Students are introduced to programming, mathematics for computing, and digital technologies, developing the analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities essential for degree-level study. Alongside technical skills, the programme builds the academic discipline and study habits that underpin success at university.

On successful completion, students are prepared to enter University of Staffordshire Computing degree programmes, including the BSc (Hons) Computing with Foundation Year pathway.

Throughout the programme, students have access to a wide range of learning support platforms, e-resources, and LinkedIn Learning to support continuous professional development and certification goals.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the following GCE Ordinary Level requirements:

Option 1

  • Local: 5 passes, with a Credit pass for English and Mathematics
  • Cambridge: 5 D passes, with C passes for English and Mathematics
  • Pearson Edexcel: 5 Grade 3 passes, with Grade 4 passes for English and Mathematics

Option 2

  • Local: 5 Credit passes, including a Credit pass for English
  • Cambridge: 5 C passes, including a C pass for English
  • Pearson Edexcel: 5 Grade 4 passes, including a Grade 4 pass for English

OR an equivalent qualification acceptable to APIIT and the University of Staffordshire.

Applicants who do not fully meet the standard criteria but hold other relevant qualifications or work experience are assessed on an individual basis.

Teaching & Learning

Semester 1 focuses on building core academic and computing skills. Students engage with English for Academic Purposes and Self & Society alongside Computing Mathematics and Introduction to Business Environments, establishing a strong foundations required for undergraduate study.

Semester 2 continues English for Academic Purposes and Self & Society, and introduces Digital Literacy & Communication and Programming & Web Development, developing students’ applied knowledge and digital competencies.
